The Cartier Theater Illuminated

Dynamic architectural lighting

Cartier Theater

Built in 1928 by the renowned architect Ludger Lemieux on foundations from 1875, the former St-Vincent-de-Paul church underwent meticulous restoration led by the Carosielli Group as part of their commitment to preserving and maintaining historical buildings. Renamed The Cartier Theatre, this building was transformed into a versatile event space, allowing to host shows, galas, weddings, award ceremonies, conferences, exhibitions, and much more.

Following a successful collaboration on the lighting project for the Rialto Theatre, also owned by the Carosielli Group, XYZ Technologies’ expertise was once again retained to design and install a dynamic architectural lighting system at The Cartier Theater. This valuable assignment aimed to highlight the new identity of this heritage site while positioning it as an essential cultural pillar of the city.

Our lighting designer was able to transform the facade into a luminous work of art, designed to attract the attention of passers-by and add an artistic dimension to the surrounding urban landscape.

Description

To enhance the facade of the Cartier Theater, we chose to install dynamic architectural LED fixtures, including LED bars and outdoor lighting projectors. These choices were made thoughtfully, taking into account our commitment to sustainability, colour consistency, and the longevity of the lighting system. To further enhance the design, we ensured to illuminate both the main facade and the towers located at the top of the former church with 360-degree lighting. This strategy seeks to emphasize the magnificence of the structure and underscore its importance within Montreal’s skyline.

To create the illusion of a visual expansion of the building, our approach in arranging these fixtures was to direct the light from the bottom up. Every architectural element was meticulously illuminated, including cornices and ledges, to showcase the majesty and beauty of the monument.

However, the design of this project presented challenges. Our biggest obstacle was preserving the architectural integrity of this historic building. It was crucial to avoid any alteration to the facade due to the installation of lighting. Therefore, we had to be creative in integrating the lighting harmoniously without compromising the aesthetic of the site.
